How to Let a Website Use Your Camera and Microphone Again in Mozilla Firefox on Windows 11
What you need: A Windows 11 computer with Mozilla Firefox and the website you blocked from using your camera and microphone, such as the website you use for video calls.
Before you begin: The steps are for the website that is open in Firefox. Firefox's symbol is an orange fox curled around a purple globe. If you came here from the Steps on Screen camera and microphone test, stay on this page: it belongs to the same website as the test. Otherwise, open the website you blocked in Firefox, the way you usually reach it. These steps remove the block, so that Firefox asks you again and you can choose Allow.
Steps
- Click the tab of the website you blocked, at the top of the Firefox window. If you came here from the Steps on Screen camera and microphone test, stay on this tab. Then look at the left end of the address bar, the long box below the tabs. Just before the website's address, find a small camera or microphone with a line through it. When the pointer is over it, the words You have blocked your camera for this website or You have blocked your microphone for this website appear. If you see no camera or microphone with a line through it, go to step 5.
- Click the camera or microphone with a line through it. A box opens below it, starting with Permissions for and the website's name. Check that it is the name of the website you blocked. If it is not, press the Esc key to close the box and start again at step 1.
- In the box, find Use the camera and Use the microphone, whichever are listed. Beside each, after the word Blocked or Blocked Temporarily, click the small X. Use the camera or Use the microphone disappears from the box, and the words You may need to reload the page for changes to apply appear.
- Press the Esc key, in the upper-left corner of the keyboard. The box closes.
- Reloading the page clears anything you typed on it and did not send. Click the circular arrow to the left of the address bar. If a box asks Are you sure?, click Leave page. The website's page loads again.
- When the website asks to use your camera or microphone, a box appears below the address bar, starting with Allow and the website's name, such as Allow example.com to use your camera and microphone? The box may appear now, or later, when the website starts your camera or microphone, such as when you join your video call. Click the Allow button at the bottom of that box.
- If you came here from the Steps on Screen camera and microphone test, click the address bar, type stepsonscreen.com/test, and press the Enter key. On the test page, click Test my camera or Test my microphone again, then click Allow when Firefox asks.
- If the website still cannot use your camera or microphone after you clicked Allow, Windows may be stopping Firefox. Click Start (the Windows logo) on the taskbar, type Settings, and click Settings in the search results. Click Privacy & security in the list on the left, then scroll down to App permissions and click Camera. Turn on Camera access and Let desktop apps access your camera, so that each shows On.
- Click Privacy & security in the list on the left again, then scroll down and click Microphone. Turn on Microphone access and Let desktop apps access your microphone, so that each shows On. Close the Settings window with the X in its upper-right corner, then do steps 5 and 6 again, and step 7 if you came here from the Steps on Screen camera and microphone test.
Expected result: The camera and microphone with a line through them no longer appear in the address bar, and after you click Allow, the website can use your camera and microphone, such as when you join your video call again. If Firefox asks again on a later visit, click Allow.
