How to Let a Website Use Your Camera and Microphone Again in Google Chrome on Windows 11

What you need: A Windows 11 computer with Google Chrome and the website you blocked from using your camera and microphone, such as the website you use for video calls.

Before you begin: The settings in these steps are for the website that is open in Google Chrome. Chrome's symbol is a circle of red, yellow and green around a blue dot. If you came here from the Steps on Screen camera and microphone test, stay on this page: it belongs to the same website as the test. Otherwise, open the website you blocked in Google Chrome, the way you usually reach it. Turning on a switch in these steps lets that website use your camera or microphone without asking you each time.

Steps

  1. Click the tab of the website you blocked, at the top of the Chrome window. If you came here from the Steps on Screen camera and microphone test, stay on this tab. Then look at the address bar, the long box near the top of the Chrome window, in the row below the tabs. At its left end, just before the website's address, find a small icon that looks like two short lines, each with a small circle, like two small sliders. When the pointer is over it, the words View site information appear.
  2. Click that icon. A box about the website opens below it, with the website's name at the top. Check that it is the name of the website you blocked. If it is not, click the X in the upper-right corner of the box and start again at step 1.
  3. If the words To use your camera, give Chrome access in system settings or To use your microphone, give Chrome access in system settings appear under Camera or Microphone in the box, Windows is stopping Chrome from using it, and the switch beside it is gray. Click system settings in those words, then do step 4. If you do not see these words, go on to step 5.
  4. If the Camera page of Settings opens, turn on Camera access and Let desktop apps access your camera. If the Microphone page opens, turn on Microphone access and Let desktop apps access your microphone. Each one shows On. Close the Settings window with the X in its upper-right corner, then start again at step 1.
  5. Find Camera in the box. If the switch beside it is off, with its round knob at the left, click the switch. The knob moves to the right, and the switch is on. If Camera is not in the box, this website is not set to block it, so leave it.
  6. Find Microphone in the box. If the switch beside it is off, click the switch so that its knob moves to the right. If Microphone is not in the box, leave it.
  7. Check that the switches beside Camera and Microphone are on, whichever are listed.
  8. Click the X in the upper-right corner of the box about the website. The box closes. A bar may appear below the address bar asking you to reload the page.
  9. Reloading the page clears anything you typed on it and did not send. Click the circular arrow to the left of the address bar. If a box asks Reload site?, click Reload. The website's page loads again.
  10. If you came here from the Steps on Screen camera and microphone test, click the address bar, type stepsonscreen.com/test, and press the Enter key. On the test page, click Test my camera or Test my microphone again.

Expected result: The switches beside Camera and Microphone are on for that website, whichever are listed. After its page loads again, the website can use your camera and microphone, such as when you join your video call again.
