How to Let a Website Use Your Camera and Microphone Again in Mozilla Firefox on a Mac
What you need: A Mac with macOS Ventura 13 or later, Mozilla Firefox, and the website you blocked from using your camera and microphone, such as the website you use for video calls.
Before you begin: The steps are for the website that is open in Firefox. Firefox's symbol is an orange fox curled around a purple globe. If you came here from the Steps on Screen camera and microphone test, stay on this page: it belongs to the same website as the test. Otherwise, open the website you blocked in Firefox, the way you usually reach it. These steps remove the block, so that Firefox asks you again and you can choose Allow. If your Mac has to close Firefox in step 9 or 10, these steps close too; to keep them in front of you, click Print these steps above them first.
Steps
- Click the tab of the website you blocked, at the top of the Firefox window. If you came here from the Steps on Screen camera and microphone test, stay on this tab. Then look at the left end of the address bar, the long box below the tabs. Just before the website's address, find a small camera or microphone with a line through it. When the pointer is over it, the words You have blocked your camera for this website or You have blocked your microphone for this website appear. If you see no camera or microphone with a line through it, go to step 5.
- Click the camera or microphone with a line through it. A box opens below it, starting with Permissions for and the website's name. Check that it is the name of the website you blocked. If it is not, press the esc key to close the box and start again at step 1.
- In the box, find Use the camera and Use the microphone, whichever are listed. Beside each, after the word Blocked or Blocked Temporarily, click the small X. Use the camera or Use the microphone disappears from the box, and the words You may need to reload the page for changes to apply appear.
- Press the esc key, in the upper-left corner of the keyboard. The box closes.
- Reloading the page clears anything you typed on it and did not send. Click the circular arrow to the left of the address bar. If a box asks Are you sure?, click Leave page. The website's page loads again.
- When the website asks to use your camera or microphone, a box appears below the address bar, starting with Allow and the website's name, such as Allow example.com to use your camera and microphone? The box may appear now, or later, when the website starts your camera or microphone, such as when you join your video call. Click the Allow button at the bottom of that box.
- If a message from your Mac then says “Firefox” would like to access the Camera or “Firefox” would like to access the Microphone, click Allow.
- If you came here from the Steps on Screen camera and microphone test, click the address bar, type stepsonscreen.com/test, and press the Return key. On the test page, click Test my camera or Test my microphone again, then click Allow when Firefox asks.
- If the website still cannot use your camera or microphone after you clicked Allow, your Mac may be stopping Firefox. Click the Apple menu (the Apple logo) in the upper-left corner of the screen, then click System Settings. Click Privacy & Security in the list on the left; scroll down the list if you do not see it. Then click Camera in the list on the right. If Firefox is in the list of apps and its switch is off, click the switch to turn it on. If a message says “Firefox” will not have access to your camera until it is quit, know that Quit & Reopen closes every Firefox window, including these steps if they are open in Firefox, and that anything you typed on a website and did not send is lost. Then click Quit & Reopen.
- In System Settings, click Privacy & Security in the list on the left again, then click Microphone in the list on the right. Turn on the switch beside Firefox in the same way, and click Quit & Reopen if the same message appears. Then open the website again in Firefox and do step 6 again, and step 8 if you came here from the Steps on Screen camera and microphone test.
Expected result: The camera and microphone with a line through them no longer appear in the address bar, and after you click Allow, the website can use your camera and microphone, such as when you join your video call again. If Firefox asks again on a later visit, click Allow.
