How to Leave Full Screen in Safari on a Mac

What you need: A Mac with Safari filling the whole screen, so that you cannot see the menu bar at the top of the screen or the Dock, the row of app icons.

Before you begin: If the page on the screen is a warning that says your Mac is blocked or infected, or asks you to call a phone number, do not use these steps. Follow How to Close a Suspicious Warning in Safari on a Mac instead.

Steps

  1. Move the pointer, the small arrow on the screen, to the very top edge of the screen. To move it, slide your mouse, or slide one finger on the trackpad. Keep the pointer at the top edge until the menu bar, the row of words across the top of the screen, slides down. Safari's toolbar, the strip with the address box, appears below the menu bar, with three round buttons at its left end. The first is red, and the last is green. If no toolbar with three round buttons appears, press the esc key, at the top-left corner of the keyboard, instead: the page goes back inside the Safari window, and you are finished.
  2. Move the pointer onto the green button, the last of the three round buttons, without moving it lower than the toolbar. If the pointer goes below the toolbar, the menu bar and the toolbar slide away; go back to step 1. Do not click the red button, because it closes the Safari window.
  3. Click the green button. A menu may appear when the pointer rests on the button; click the green button itself. Safari's window shrinks back to the size it had before it filled the screen.

Expected result: Safari is in a window again, with the three round buttons in the window's upper-left corner, and the menu bar is at the top of the screen again.
