What Does Right-Click Mean?

To right-click is to press the right mouse button once, instead of the left one. It opens a small menu of choices for the thing under the pointer, such as Copy or Rename. To close the menu without choosing anything, click an empty spot away from it.

What it looks like

A drawing of a mouse with its right button shaded, and beside it a pointer resting on a file with a small menu open next to it, listing Open, Copy, Rename and Delete.

The menu opens beside the pointer. Its choices depend on what you right-clicked: a file, a word and a picture each have their own list.

On Windows and on a Mac

On a Windows 11 laptop's touchpad, press its lower-right corner, or tap it with two fingers. On a Mac, a right-click is called a secondary click or Control-click: hold down the Control key while you click, or click the trackpad with two fingers.
