Saved passwords
Find Saved Passwords on a New Chromebook
Google Password Manager keeps the passwords you saved in Chrome while you were signed in to your Google Account. On a new Chromebook that you sign in to with the same Google Account, you can check its list to see which of those passwords are there.
Find the list in Chrome
The list shows the passwords saved to the Google Account you use to sign in to this Chromebook.
- Click Launcher, the circle at the lower-left corner of the screen. Type Chrome and click Chrome in the results.
- Click the three dots standing one above the other at the upper right of Chrome. A menu opens.
- Click Passwords and autofill, then Google Password Manager.
- Under Passwords, look for the website's name. To find it faster, click the box that says Search passwords and type part of the website's name.
When the website's name is in the list, Chrome has your password for it. The next time you open that website's sign-in page, Chrome fills in your password, or offers it when you click the username box.
If a website is not in the list
When a website's name is not in the list, this Google Account has no saved password for it. If you signed in to Chrome on your old computer with a different Google Account, look there first: open passwords.google.com in Chrome and sign in with that account. It lists the passwords saved to that account.
To get a new password, use the website's own sign-in page. You need access to the email address or phone number that the website has for you.
- Open the website in Chrome by typing its address, such as the one on a statement or letter from the company. For help with the address bar, follow How to Go to a Website by Its Address on a Chromebook.
- Open the website's sign-in page the way you usually do.
- Click Forgot password? on that page. Some websites word it differently, such as Forgot your password? or Reset password.
- Type the email address or phone number you use for that website, and do what the page asks.
- Open the email or text message the website sends within a few minutes. If it has a link, click the link. If it has a code, type the code on the website's page. Ignore any other message.
- Type a new password in the boxes on the page, then click the button on the page that finishes the change. The new password works on the website now, whether or not Chrome saves it.
- When Chrome shows a small box below the address bar asking whether to save the password, click Save. Do not click Never, which stops Chrome from offering to save passwords for that website.
- If no box appeared, open Google Password Manager as in the steps above and click Add. Type the website's address, your username and your new password in the boxes, then click Save.
Once you have clicked Save or added the password yourself, the website is in the list, and Chrome fills in your password the next time you sign in there.
