They Can’t Hear Me on My Video Call
If you can hear other people on a video call but they cannot hear you, start with the microphone button in the call. Turning up your speakers makes other people louder to you; it does not make your voice louder to them.
Check the microphone button in the call
Look at the call's buttons for a microphone picture. If the buttons are out of sight, move the pointer over the call or tap the call screen to show them. A line through the microphone picture means your microphone is muted: the call is not sending your voice.
If the microphone picture has a line through it, click or tap it once to unmute. A button labelled Unmute does the same thing. Say a few words and ask, “Can you hear me now?” If the other person can hear you, carry on with your call.
If they still cannot hear you
Use our free microphone test between calls. Open it on the same computer or phone, in the same browser you use for the call. The test checks whether that browser can hear your voice.
On the test page, find Microphone and press Test my microphone. Your browser may ask whether this website may use your microphone. Choose Allow, then say a few words in your normal voice. Nothing you say is recorded, saved or sent.
If the test hears you, its bar moves and it shows ✓ Your microphone works in this browser. It then turns the microphone off. If it cannot hear you, the page gives you the next action to take. Any lesson it offers is for your own computer or phone.
What the result tells you
A successful test means this browser can hear you. Your call also needs its own microphone access and an unmuted microphone. Return to the call and check that its microphone button has no line through it before you speak.
If your call opens in a separate app, such as a video-call app on your Home screen or desktop, this browser test does not check that app's settings. Open that app's Help and look for its microphone instructions.
