How to Save a Word Document from an Email in New Outlook and Change It on Windows 11
What you need: A Windows 11 computer with the new Outlook app and Microsoft Word, and an email in Outlook with a Word document attached. Word is on this computer if Word appears when you click Start and type Word.
Steps
- Click Start (the Windows logo) on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen.
- Type Outlook, then click Outlook in the search results to open it. If the results show both Outlook and Outlook (classic), click Outlook.
- Click the email to open it. The attached document shows in the message as a small box with the document's name.
- Click the small arrow pointing down at the right side of that box. A menu opens.
- Click Download. A window opens for choosing the folder where the document will be saved.
- In the list on the left side of that window, click Downloads. Then click Save at the bottom right. The window closes. The email keeps its own copy of the document, and the copy you change is the one in Downloads.
- Click Start again. Type File Explorer, then click File Explorer in the search results to open it.
- Click Downloads on the left. Find the document's name and double-click it by clicking twice quickly. The document opens in Word.
- If a yellow bar across the top of the document says Protected View, click Enable Editing on that bar. The bar goes away, and you can now type in the document. If the bar is red instead, click the X at the upper-right corner of the Word window to close Word, and leave this document unchanged.
- Make your change in the document, such as typing a new date.
- Click File at the upper-left corner of the Word window, then click Save. Word saves your change in the document in Downloads.
- Click the X at the upper-right corner of the Word window to close Word.
- In File Explorer, double-click the same document in Downloads again. When it opens, look for your change.
Expected result: The document from Downloads opens in Word and shows your change. To open it again later, open it from Downloads in File Explorer, not from the email.
