How to Take a Screenshot of Part of the Screen on Windows 11
What you need: A Windows 11 computer showing the message, window or page you want a screenshot of. A screenshot is a picture of what is on the screen. These steps use Snipping Tool, which is included with Windows, and save the picture in Documents.
Steps
- Click Start (the Windows logo) on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen.
- Type Snipping Tool, then click Snipping Tool in the search results to open it. A small Snipping Tool window opens.
- In the Snipping Tool window, click Snipping Mode, then click Rectangle in the list that opens. If you are not sure which button is Snipping Mode, point to each button at the top of the window until its name appears.
- Click New. The screen dims while Snipping Tool waits for you to choose an area.
- Place the pointer at one corner of the part of the screen you want. Hold down the left mouse button (or the left side of the touchpad), move the pointer to the opposite corner, and release the button.
- The picture you took opens in the Snipping Tool window. Look at it to check it shows what you wanted. If it does not, click New and do step 5 again. Snipping Tool also keeps its own copy of each picture in a folder named Screenshots.
- Click Save as at the top of the Snipping Tool window. If you are not sure which symbol it is, point to each symbol there until its name appears. A window titled Save as opens.
- In the list on the left side of the Save as window, click Documents.
- Click the File name box near the bottom of the window. Click it three times quickly to highlight all the text in it, then type a name, such as Error message.
- Click Save at the bottom right of the window.
Expected result: The Save as window closes, and the picture is saved in Documents with the name you typed.
