How to Cancel a Document Waiting to Print on Windows 11

What you need: A Windows 11 computer and the name of the document you no longer want printed.

Steps

  1. Click Start (the Windows logo) on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Type Settings, then click Settings in the search results to open it.
  3. Click Bluetooth & devices in the list on the left.
  4. Click Printers & scanners. A list of printers appears.
  5. Click the name of the printer you print on. If you are not sure which one it is, click the first name in the list. The printer's page opens.
  6. Click Open print queue. A window opens with a list of the documents waiting to print on that printer. If your document is not in the list, close the window with the X in its upper-right corner, click the back arrow at the top left of Settings, and repeat steps 5 and 6 with the next printer's name. If no printer lists your document, nothing is waiting to print it, and you are done.
  7. Find your document's name in the list. Right-click it by clicking it once with the right mouse button, then click Cancel.
  8. A message asks Are you sure you want to cancel printing this document? Click Yes.
  9. Watch the list. The document's status may change to Deleted for a moment, then it disappears from the list. If it is still in the list after a minute, close the window, turn the printer off, and restart the computer. Then do steps 1 to 6 again to check that the document is gone.
  10. Close the print queue window and the Settings window with the X in the upper-right corner of each.

Expected result: Your document is no longer in the print queue, so the printer will not print it. If the printer had already started a page, that page may still come out.
