How to Save a Word Document from an Email in New Outlook and Change It on a Mac

What you need: A Mac with Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Word, and an email in Outlook with a Word document attached. These steps are for the new Outlook for Mac. If the Outlook window has a New Outlook switch near its upper-right corner that is turned off, click it and wait for Outlook to reopen.

Steps

  1. Click Finder (the blue smiling face) in the Dock, the row of app icons along the edge of the screen.
  2. In the menu bar at the top of the screen, click Go, then Applications. Find Microsoft Outlook and click it twice quickly to open it.
  3. Click the email to open it. The attached document shows in the message with the document's name.
  4. Click the small arrow pointing down next to the document's name. A menu opens.
  5. Click Download. A box for choosing where to save the document opens.
  6. Click the Where menu, which shows a place name, then click Downloads in the list. If you see a larger window with a list of places on its left side instead, click Downloads in that list. Then click Save. The email keeps its own copy of the document, and the copy you change is the one in Downloads.
  7. Click Finder in the Dock again. In the menu bar, click Go, then Downloads.
  8. Find the document's name and click it twice quickly. The document opens in Word.
  9. If a bar across the top of the document has an Enable Editing button, click it. You can now type in the document.
  10. Make your change in the document, such as typing a new date.
  11. In the menu bar at the top of the screen, click File, then Save. Word saves your change in the document in Downloads.
  12. In the menu bar, click Word, then Quit Word.
  13. Click Finder in the Dock. In the window showing Downloads, click the same document twice quickly again. When it opens, look for your change.

Expected result: The document from Downloads opens in Word and shows your change. To open it again later, open it from Downloads in Finder, not from the email.
