How to Rename a File or Folder on a Chromebook

What you need: A Chromebook, the file or folder you want to rename, and the name of the folder it is in, such as Downloads.

Steps

  1. Click Launcher, the circle at the lower-left corner of the screen.
  2. Type Files, then click Files in the results to open it.
  3. On the left, click the folder that holds your item, such as Downloads (under My files) or My Drive (under Google Drive). To open a folder inside it, double-click that folder: click its name twice quickly. Continue until you see your item.
  4. Click the item's name once.
  5. Hold down Ctrl, near the lower-left corner of the keyboard. While holding it, press Enter, on the right side of the keyboard, once. Then let go of both keys. The name becomes a box you can type in, with all or part of the name highlighted.
  6. Type the new name. It replaces the highlighted part. For a file, look at the end of the name in the box: if its ending, such as .pdf, is gone, type it again at the end.
  7. Press Enter.

Expected result: The item appears with its new name in the same place.
