What Is the Enter Key?

The Enter key is the large key at the right side of the keyboard. Pressing it finishes what you typed, such as a website address in the address bar, so the computer acts on it. In a letter or an email, it starts a new line instead.

What it looks like

Two drawings of keyboards, a Windows keyboard above a Mac keyboard. On each, the large key at the right end of the third row from the bottom is shaded: Enter on Windows, return on the Mac.

It is at the right end of the third row from the bottom, on most US keyboards below the key with a backward slash on it. It is usually wider than the letter keys around it.

On Windows and on a Mac

On a Windows keyboard the key is marked Enter. On a Mac keyboard the same key is marked return, and the lessons for a Mac call it the Return key. It does the same job on both.
