How to Close a Suspicious Warning in Microsoft Edge on Windows 11

What you need: A Windows 11 computer with a suspicious warning open in Microsoft Edge.

Before you begin: Leave the warning alone: do not click inside it, call any phone number it shows, or type anything. Ignore any button in the warning that says it will close the warning.

Steps

  1. Look at the top of the screen. If the warning fills the whole screen and you cannot see Edge's row of tabs and its address bar, the long box that shows a website's address, press and hold the Esc key, in the upper-left corner of the keyboard. Keep holding it until the tabs and the address bar appear, which can take a few seconds, then release it. If you can already see them, go on to the next step.
  2. Look at the row of tabs along the top of the Edge window. The highlighted tab belongs to the page showing now: the warning. If the warning's window has no row of tabs, the warning is in a small window of its own.
  3. Click the X at the right end of the warning's tab. If its window has no row of tabs, click the X in the upper-right corner of that window instead. The warning closes, or a box asks whether you want to leave the site.
  4. If a box asks Leave site?, click Leave. The warning closes.
  5. If the warning is still there, close the whole Edge window. This closes all its tabs, and anything you typed on a page but did not save may be lost. Click the X in the upper-right corner of the window, at the far right of the row of tabs. If Edge asks whether to close all tabs, click Close all. If a box asks Leave site?, click Leave.
  6. If you closed the Edge window in step 5, the next time you open Microsoft Edge, do not click Restore if it offers to reopen your previous pages. That keeps the warning closed. If the warning appears again when Edge opens, go back to step 1.
  7. If you installed something, shared personal information, or let someone control the computer because of the warning, stop following their instructions and use Microsoft's steps for someone who acted on a scam warning. If you gave payment details or sent money, also call your bank using the number on your card.

Expected result: The warning is gone. Edge shows your other pages, or the Edge window has closed and no warning is on the screen.
