What Is a DVD Drive?

A DVD drive reads a round DVD disc. It can be built into a computer or be a separate device connected by a cable.

What it looks like

A generic DVD drive seen from above has its tray open. A round disc sits in the tray with its printed label side up. A small button on the drive’s front edge is labelled Open button.

A drive with a tray has a flat part that slides out for the disc. The disc rests in the round recess with its printed label facing up; some drives instead have a narrow slot without a tray.
