What Is a Battery?

A battery stores power so a laptop or phone can work without being plugged into a wall outlet. The battery picture on the screen shows roughly how much charge remains.

What it looks like

Four battery symbols in a row are filled a little, halfway, almost full, and part way with a lightning bolt. Their labels read Low, Half, Nearly full and Charging. More filled in means more charge left.

More filled-in space means more charge remains. A percentage such as 80% gives a more exact amount; a plug or lightning bolt shows that the charger is connected.
