How to Scan a Paper Document into a PDF on an iPhone

What you need: An iPhone, the Files app (a blue folder icon), and the paper document you want to scan.

Before you begin: Lay the first page flat on a table in good light, with nothing covering its edges. The scan becomes a PDF file that you can attach to an email or send to a website later.

Steps

  1. On the Home screen, tap Files, the blue folder icon. If you do not see it, put one finger in the middle of the Home screen and slide it down a little. A search box appears at the top. Type Files, then tap Files in the list.
  2. Tap Browse at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Tap the More button, three dots inside a circle, at the top right of the screen. A menu opens.
  4. Tap Scan Documents. If the iPhone asks whether Files may use the camera, tap OK or Allow. The camera view fills the screen.
  5. Hold the iPhone flat above the page so that the whole page shows on the screen. Keep it still. The iPhone takes the picture by itself when it finds the page's edges, and a small picture of the page appears near the bottom of the screen. If nothing happens after a few seconds, tap the large round button at the bottom of the screen to take the picture.
  6. If the camera view is still on the screen, the page is kept: go on to step 7. If the iPhone instead shows the page with a round handle at each corner, check that each handle sits on a corner of the paper. If one does not, put your finger on it and slide it onto the corner. Then tap Keep Scan (it may say Keep). If the picture is blurred or cut off, tap Retake instead and take it again.
  7. If the document has another page, lay that page in place of the first and repeat steps 5 and 6. Do this for each page.
  8. When every page is scanned, tap the check mark at the top right or bottom right of the screen. On some iPhones it is the word Save or Done instead. If a screen opens for saving the scan, with Save at the top right and Save as Scanned Document at the bottom, go on to step 9. If no such screen opens, the scan is already saved: go to step 11.
  9. Tap the Scanned Document name at the bottom of the screen. When the keyboard appears, tap the delete key on the keyboard (an arrow pointing left with an X in it) until the box is empty, then type a name you will recognize, such as Electric bill. If no keyboard appears, go on to step 10; step 11 lets you rename the scan.
  10. Tap Save at the top right.
  11. Tap Recents at the bottom of the screen. The scan is first in the list, with a small picture of its first page and its name under it or beside it. If the name still begins with Scanned Document, touch and hold the small picture until a menu opens, tap Rename, tap the delete key on the keyboard (an arrow pointing left with an X in it) until the box is empty, type a name you will recognize, and tap Done on the keyboard.

Expected result: The PDF appears first in Recents in the Files app, with the name you typed and a small picture of the first page you scanned.
