What Is the Command Key?

The Command key is a key on a Mac keyboard that you hold down while you press another key, so that the two together do a task. Holding Command and pressing C copies what is highlighted, and holding Command and pressing Z undoes your last change. Pressing Command on its own does nothing that you can see.

What it looks like

A drawing of a Mac keyboard. The two keys on each side of the space bar, marked command and ⌘, are shaded.

There is one Command key on each side of the space bar, the long key at the bottom of the keyboard. Each is marked command and ⌘, a square with a loop at each corner. Both do the same thing.

On Windows and on a Mac

Windows keyboards have no Command key. Many tasks that use Command on a Mac use the Ctrl key on a Windows computer, such as Ctrl and C to copy.
