What Is the Caps Lock Key?

The Caps Lock key makes every letter you type a capital letter. It stays on after you let go of it, until you press it once more. A password is usually refused when it is typed in capitals by mistake, so Caps Lock being on is a common reason a correct password is refused.

What it looks like

Two drawings of keyboards, a Windows keyboard above a Mac keyboard. On each, the key at the left end of the third row from the bottom is shaded, marked Caps Lock on Windows and caps lock on the Mac.

It is at the left end of the third row from the bottom, above the left Shift key. Many keyboards have a small light on the key, or above the keyboard, that is lit while Caps Lock is on.

On Windows and on a Mac

On a Mac keyboard it is marked caps lock or ⇪, an arrow pointing up above a short line, and its small light is green when it is on. On a Windows keyboard it is marked Caps Lock.
